NAFDAC clarifies that it did not advise Nigerians to avoid eating bread, countering a misleading video. The agency reassured the public of its commitment to food safety, warning against the use of unapproved additives like saccharine in bread, and emphasizing strict regulatory standards.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified that it did not issue any directive advising Nigerians to avoid eating bread. This response follows the circulation of a misleading video online, which incorrectly claimed that NAFDAC had warned against bread consumption.

The confusion arose after Roseline Ajayi, NAFDAC's South-West Coordinator, commented that some bread products were failing laboratory tests due to using saccharine, a sugar substitute. However, NAFDAC's Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that the agency never advised against consuming bread and that the statement in the video did not reflect the agency’s position. She reassured the public that NAFDAC is committed to ensuring the safety and quality of food products in Nigeria.

The agency also reminded bakers that both national and international standards prohibit the use of unapproved additives like saccharine in bread, and violators will be sanctioned accordingly.
