The Federal Government has released funds to pay withheld salaries for the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and benefits for retirees. This comes amid a nationwide strike by NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) demanding a resolution of salary disparities.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated funds to cover the outstanding salaries of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU). This announcement was made by Mr. Bawa Mokwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday.

In addition to addressing NASU's salary concerns, the government also released funds to provide benefits for retirees enrolled in the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS). Mokwa confirmed that payments to NASU members had already started, with many individuals reporting receipt of their salaries.

The government emphasized its commitment to ensuring the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees. This development comes amid a nationwide strike initiated by NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), which began earlier in the week. SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim stated that the strike would persist for a week unless the government adequately addressed the unions' grievances.

Previously, NASU and SSANU had issued a seven-day ultimatum for the government to resolve discrepancies in salary payments among various university unions, highlighting the urgency of their demands.
