The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 12, a public holiday to commemorate the 2024 Democracy Day celebration. Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, announced this on behalf of the government, with Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo extending congratulations to Nigerians.

Tunji-Ojo urged reflection on Nigeria's history and emphasized unity and democratic principles. He highlighted President Bola Tinubu's commitment to economic reforms and security enhancement.

The day holds special significance as it marks the anniversary of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, known for its fairness and peacefulness. Former President Muhammadu Buhari had designated June 12 as Democracy Day to honor the late Chief Moshood Abiola, the election's winner, and other key figures.

Despite challenges, Nigeria continues its journey toward a brighter democratic future, marked by the sacrifices of leaders like Abiola and activists like Gani Fawehinmi.
