Nigeria’s aviation sector introduces mobile courts at airports to curb unruly passenger behavior, including staff assaults and facility disruptions. The initiative complements extended operational hours, stricter security measures, and public sensitization campaigns, ensuring smoother airport operations and compliance with Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations.
Nigeria’s aviation authorities are introducing mobile courts across airports to address growing concerns over unruly passenger behavior. These courts aim to handle incidents like physical altercations with staff and disruptions caused during protests over flight delays and cancellations.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) emphasized their commitment to addressing these issues during a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos. Among the measures discussed was extending operational hours at certain “sunset airports” until 10 p.m., provided safety and lighting requirements are met.
Attendees included representatives from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), and Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON). These stakeholders also highlighted the importance of streamlining flight schedules and deploying backup aircraft to manage unforeseen delays.
To prevent recurring incidents, aviation security personnel will be trained to handle agitated passengers professionally. Public awareness campaigns will educate travelers on how weather and operational challenges can impact flight schedules.
The meeting also addressed environmental hazards like bird strikes and emphasized the need for airlines to collaborate on luggage handling to prevent disputes. Airlines were reminded to fulfill obligations outlined in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, including assisting disruptions.
These initiatives aim to enhance passenger experiences, ensure compliance, and maintain decorum within Nigeria’s aviation industry. The mobile courts represent a proactive step toward resolving conflicts efficiently while deterring misconduct.
