The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered the immediate reactivation of all phone lines blocked due to unlinked National Identification Numbers (NIN). This move aims to address public concerns and ensure that all SIMs are properly linked ahead of the extended deadline on July 31, 2024.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered telecommunications operators to reactivate all phone lines that were blocked due to the lack of linkage between National Identification Numbers (NIN) and SIM cards. This directive comes after widespread public concern regarding the impact of these restrictions on citizens, especially in light of the planned protests set for August.

Reuben Muoka, the NCC's Director of Media and Public Affairs, stated that many subscribers experienced disruptions over the weekend because their NINs had not been verified with their SIMs, leading to blocks by telecom service providers. The NCC had previously implemented a policy mandating the linkage of NINs to SIM cards, with the initial deadline set for April 15, 2024, extended to July 31, 2024.

The NIN-SIM linkage initiative aims to enhance national security and ensure an accurate database of SIM ownership, thereby protecting users' identities and facilitating access to a robust digital economy. Acknowledging the difficulties faced by consumers due to the recent blocks, the NCC has instructed operators to restore access to the affected lines temporarily. Subscribers are encouraged to complete their NIN verification promptly to avoid future disruptions. The Commission emphasized that consumer accessibility remains a priority as the deadline for full compliance approaches.
