The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the disbursement of ₦50,000 monthly stipends to 10,000 selected youths from the Niger Delta as part of its Youths Internship Scheme.

According to the commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Seledi-Thompson-Wakama, the initiative is designed to provide practical, hands-on training across various industries for one year. The program aims to equip young people with essential skills that will enhance their employment prospects.

During the scheme’s inauguration in July 2024, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the Federal Government’s approval of the monthly stipend. Following a thorough selection process, NDDC has now placed beneficiaries in different organizations to begin their internships, with payments already initiated.

The commission revealed that over 3.2 million youths applied for the program, underscoring the high demand for economic opportunities in the region. Officials have assured the public that the selection process was transparent and focused on identifying deserving candidates.

Beyond providing financial assistance, the initiative also helps NDDC collect valuable data on youth employment, skill levels, and career interests to inform future empowerment programs. Additionally, the commission has partnered with global consulting firm KPMG to improve governance and ensure efficient policy implementation.

The rollout of the stipend has generated mixed reactions online, with some praising the effort while others question its transparency and sustainability. Nonetheless, NDDC remains committed to supporting youth development in the Niger Delta.
