Atiku Abubakar, former Nigerian Vice President, warned that the country's democracy is at risk due to political missteps. He criticized the judiciary's growing influence and the government's control over political parties. Along with Nasir El-Rufai, he urged opposition unity to protect Nigeria's democratic future.
Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has expressed grave concerns about the country's democratic future. Speaking at a national conference in Abuja, Atiku warned that Nigeria could lose its hard-won democracy if the current political trajectory continues. He emphasized that the choice between preserving democracy or abandoning it lies in the hands of Nigerians. Atiku criticized the growing influence of the judiciary over electoral outcomes, asserting that it was undermining the people's will. He also highlighted the growing dominance of governance over political parties, which are supposed to guide policy, not be dictated to by the government.
Atiku also reflected on his past efforts to amend the Electoral Act, lamenting that his proposals were unlikely to be adopted by the current National Assembly, which he described as a "rubber stamp" for the government. He also alleged that the ruling party was offering financial inducements to opposition leaders, further eroding the democratic process.
Echoing Atiku’s sentiments, former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, described the situation as a national emergency. He called on opposition parties to unite to safeguard Nigeria's democracy, drawing comparisons to the formation of the APC in 2014. Both leaders emphasized the importance of party funding and internal democracy to strengthen Nigeria's political landscape.
As both Atiku and El-Rufai cautioned against Nigeria losing its democracy, they urged Nigerians to take action before it’s too late.
