President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized patience regarding Nigeria’s electricity challenges, highlighting ongoing reforms, aging infrastructure, and alternative energy projects. During a visit from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Tinubu stressed youth training, industrial development, and partnerships as critical steps toward sustainable solutions, reaffirming his commitment to long-term power sector reforms.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to temper expectations of a swift resolution to the country's electricity crisis, citing the aged infrastructure and the need for systemic reforms.
Speaking during German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's visit, Tinubu acknowledged the ongoing challenges, including frequent grid collapses and unreliable supply. He emphasized that while Siemens Energy is actively working to improve the power sector, achieving steady electricity will take time and sustained effort.
“Transmission lines in Nigeria are 50 to 60 years old,” Tinubu stated. “We are addressing these snags to reduce disruptions. Decentralizing power generation and distribution has already begun, enabling states and subnational entities to develop their systems. We’re also leveraging solar energy and underutilized dams to expand rural electrification.”
Highlighting Nigeria’s young and industrious population, the President underscored the potential for innovation and growth. “Our vibrant youth are ready to learn, and our industrial plans are geared towards establishing assembly plants and fostering economic progress. Additionally, Nigeria’s solid mineral reserves present opportunities for partnerships with German businesses.”
Tinubu stressed the importance of fostering a business-friendly environment, with reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment and promoting alternative energy solutions.
The President reaffirmed his administration's commitment to laying the groundwork for a stable and reliable power supply. "While there are no magical solutions, we are dedicated to implementing lasting changes for the benefit of all Nigerians."
Germany's President Steinmeier also praised Nigeria’s efforts, noting the importance of collaboration in energy and industrial sectors for mutual progress.
