Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffer a significant drop in FIFA rankings, falling from 36th to 44th globally after a disappointing 2-1 loss to Rwanda in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. The defeat ends their unbeaten streak and causes them to lose their fourth-place position in Africa.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have experienced a significant drop in the latest FIFA rankings, sliding from 36th to 44th place in the world. This eight-place decline marks Nigeria’s largest drop in recent years, primarily due to a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Before the Rwanda loss, the Eagles had secured a 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic, which had already guaranteed their qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
This latest fall has also seen Nigeria lose its previous fourth-place ranking in Africa, now sitting in fifth. The Eagles’ poor performance in their recent matches has directly impacted their position in the global standings. In contrast, teams like Morocco, Senegal, and Algeria have maintained their positions at the top of the African rankings, with Morocco still leading the continent, although they dropped one place globally to 14th. Senegal has moved up to 17th in the world, while Algeria now ranks ahead of Nigeria in the fourth spot.
The global FIFA rankings continue to be led by Argentina, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil. Nigeria’s decline reflects the challenging phase the team is facing, and they will need to improve their form in upcoming fixtures to regain their standing on the global stage.
