The 2025 Times Higher Education rankings excluded UNILAG and OAU from Nigeria’s top 10 most prestigious universities, sparking debate. Private institutions like AUN and Covenant University led the list, while experts cite funding challenges for public universities' decline. The rankings highlight shifting trends in Nigeria’s higher education sector.

The 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings have sparked debate in Nigeria's academic community, as the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) failed to make the top 10 most prestigious universities list.

The new rankings, which assess universities based on academic performance, research output, and global reputation, placed the American University of Nigeria (AUN) at the top, followed by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and Covenant University. Other notable mentions included Lagos State University (LASU), the University of Ibadan (UI), and Bayero University.

The exclusion of UNILAG and OAU has raised eyebrows, as both institutions have historically been among Nigeria's most respected. Some experts attribute this to funding challenges, declining research impact, and faculty strikes, which have affected the overall performance of public universities.

Reactions on social media were mixed. While some supported the rankings, citing innovative strides made by private institutions, others questioned the methodology, arguing that UNILAG and OAU remain key players in Nigerian education.

A lecturer from OAU, who spoke anonymously, emphasized that rankings do not always reflect an institution’s true impact, pointing out that alumni achievements and industry contributions should also be considered.

With Nigeria’s education sector evolving, experts suggest better funding, improved research policies, and global partnerships as strategies to help public universities regain their top positions.

The 2025 rankings highlight a shifting academic landscape, with newer institutions gaining prominence while traditional powerhouses face increasing competition.
