Nigeria suffered another national grid collapse on Wednesday, causing widespread power outages. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the failure, marking the second collapse in 2025. This follows a pattern of instability, with at least 12 incidents recorded in 2024. Authorities are working to restore electricity.
Nigeria experienced a widespread power outage on Wednesday following the collapse of the national grid, marking the second incident this year. The Nigerian System Operator’s portal reported that the collapse occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m., leaving several parts of the country in darkness.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to disclose the cause of the disruption. However, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the grid failure, stating that efforts to restore power had already commenced. In a statement on X, AEDC assured customers that it was working with relevant authorities to stabilize the grid and fully restore electricity.
Similarly, a widely followed National Grid account on X acknowledged the incident, calling it a “GRID DISTURBANCE” that affected multiple regions. This latest failure follows a similar collapse on January 11, 2025, and adds to a troubling trend of grid instability. In 2024 alone, the national grid suffered at least 12 collapses, highlighting the ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector.
Efforts to reach TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah for comments were unsuccessful as she stated she was in transit but promised to respond later.
The recurring power grid failures continue to impact businesses and households, raising concerns about Nigeria’s energy infrastructure. With no immediate solutions in sight, citizens remain frustrated over the country’s unreliable power supply.
