Nigeria was thrust into darkness once again as the national power grid collapsed for the fifth time in 2024, triggering widespread power outages across the country. Reports indicate that the blackout struck various regions at different times, with some areas experiencing the outage as early as 2:00 a.m., while others were affected around 7:00 a.m.
Data obtained from the Nigerian System Operator's portal revealed a drastic drop in power generation, plummeting from 629.90 megawatts to just 172.00 megawatts by 7:00 a.m.
The blackout persisted for approximately five hours before power was gradually restored in certain parts of the nation. The cause of the grid collapse remains unknown, as the spokesman for the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Ndidi Mbah, has yet to provide any clarification. Similarly, electricity distribution companies have remained silent on the matter.
This latest grid failure comes on the heels of the removal of power subsidies, which led to a significant increase in electricity tariffs, particularly affecting Band A customers who experienced a 300 percent hike.
