The Nigeria Police Force warns against fraudulent use of the IGP's name by corrupt officers. The Force urges public vigilance and reporting of misconduct, aiming to uphold integrity and restore trust. A prior alert had already cautioned against exploiting the IGP's authority for illegal gain.
The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning against the misuse of the name and authority of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, by corrupt officers engaged in fraudulent activities. In a statement released on Saturday, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, expressed deep concern over the continued unprofessional behavior of certain officers, which not only tarnishes the image of the police but also undermines public trust in law enforcement.
Adejobi highlighted that despite previous disciplinary actions and warnings, some officers continue to exploit the IGP's name to carry out illegal activities. This misuse often involves fraudulently implying that the IGP is complicit, thereby intimidating victims into silence and preventing them from reporting such misconduct. The statement stressed that these actions are detrimental to the police force’s reputation and its relationship with the public.
The Police Force has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior by officers, especially those claiming connections with senior police officials for personal gain. Adejobi emphasized the importance of reporting these incidents to the Complaint Response Units or the Commissioner of Police in the relevant state. This warning follows an earlier one in October, further underlining the police's commitment to rooting out such corruption and ensuring accountability within its ranks.
