Nigerian football officials are pushing for FIFA to penalize South Africa after they fielded an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho. If successful, South Africa could lose three points, reshaping Group C’s standings and boosting Nigeria’s chances of qualification.

According to Score Nigeria, some top Nigerian football officials have vowed to challenge South Africa's use of a suspended player in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, aiming to secure a three-point and three-goal forfeiture for Bafana Bafana.

The officials addressed the Super Eagles squad in Uyo following their 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe, assuring them that a formal complaint would be lodged. Teboho Mokoena, who had already received two yellow cards in previous qualifiers, was ineligible to play, violating FIFA regulations.

“We will sit down and ensure South Africa is penalized. FIFA sanctioned us for a similar issue during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers,” a senior Nigerian official told the team.

If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favor, South Africa’s 13-point lead at the top of Group C would be reduced to 10 points, narrowing their advantage over Rwanda and Benin to just two points. This could significantly impact the qualification race.

Nigeria’s move follows Lesotho’s initial protest, which was later withdrawn. However, FIFA could still intervene if the case is officially escalated.

With the Super Eagles struggling to secure a World Cup berth, this development could provide a much-needed boost to their qualification hopes.
