Suspended Bauchi Central lawmaker, Senator Abdul Ningi, has accused the Senate of attempting to silence or arrest him following his exposure of alleged budget padding in the 2024 appropriation budget.
The Senate suspended Ningi for three months after he claimed that projects worth N3.7 trillion in the budget were untraceable. In an interview with Arise TV, Ningi asserted that the Senate has not engaged with him regarding evidence or documents supporting his claims, opting instead to silence or arrest him.
Ningi warned that he has "opened this can of worms" and that neither he nor the Senate would be able to control the consequences. Nigerians have expressed mixed reactions to Ningi's allegations, with some dismissing his claims as lacking evidence, while others believe his accusations shed light on the Senate's alleged corruption and lack of accountability.
Karen Bush noted the Senate's attempts at damage control during the proceedings, suggesting a systemic issue of corruption within the legislative body. However, some Nigerians emphasized the urgency of addressing such allegations to prevent further deterioration of the country's integrity and resources.
