The Nigerian Army has increased soldiers’ daily feeding allowance from ₦1,500 to ₦3,000, effective March. Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede also announced a housing scheme and low-interest loans for troops. Additionally, the Army will distribute 100,000 uniforms monthly to ensure proper military gear for all personnel.

Nigerian soldiers have expressed mixed reactions following the announcement that their daily Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) will be increased from ₦1,500 to ₦3,000. The decision, revealed by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede during a visit to the 81 Division in Lagos, is aimed at improving the welfare of military personnel.

Oluyede acknowledged that the previous feeding allowance was inadequate and assured troops that their well-being remains a top priority. The increment, set to take effect at the end of March, is expected to enhance morale within the ranks.

In addition to the feeding allowance increase, Oluyede announced an expansion of the Nigerian Army Housing Scheme to support retiring warrant officers. The initiative will provide affordable two- and three-bedroom homes in locations such as Abuja, Ibadan, Jos, and Port Harcourt, with prices starting at ₦8 million.

The COAS also introduced a low-interest loan scheme at a 3% rate, advising soldiers to borrow only when necessary. Furthermore, he disclosed that the Army had begun the monthly distribution of 100,000 uniforms to ensure that no soldier has to buy their own kit.

While some troops have welcomed the developments, public reaction on social media has been skeptical, with users questioning how much ₦3,000 can buy in the current economy. Others, however, see it as a step in the right direction for military welfare.
