Troops from the 6 Division Nigerian Army have recovered over 60,000 litres of stolen crude oil in the Niger Delta. The operation led to the dismantling of illegal refineries, the destruction of illicit boats, and the arrest of 15 oil thieves, contributing to a safer environment for oil production.

Between January 6 and 12, 2025, the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, with support from other security agencies, carried out an extensive operation in the Niger Delta. This resulted in the recovery of over 60,000 litres of stolen crude oil. The operation focused on dismantling illegal refining operations and disrupting the networks involved in oil theft in the region.

A total of 32 illicit refining sites were destroyed, and 14 boats used for illegal activities were deactivated. Fifteen individuals suspected of oil theft were arrested during the operation. In Rivers State, the army targeted multiple locations, including the Bille area in Degema and the Imo River stretch, where over 40,000 litres of stolen crude were recovered. Several illegal refineries were shut down, along with boats used in the illegal operations.

Troops also seized more stolen oil in areas like Etche, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, and Buguma. In addition, one bus was intercepted in Ndoni, carrying sacks of stolen condensates. Further operations in Bayelsa State uncovered more illegal refining sites and seized additional stolen oil.

The efforts of the Nigerian Army have disrupted the illegal oil trade significantly, with the leadership praising the troops for their role in protecting national oil resources. These operations are part of ongoing efforts to reduce oil theft and create a safer environment for lawful oil exploration in the Niger Delta.
