The Nigerian government has submitted documents for the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran agitator arrested in Finland. Ekpa faces charges related to terrorism, including incitement to violence. Finnish authorities remanded him for suspected terrorist activities, and the Nigerian government is following international legal protocols for his extradition.
The Nigerian government has officially initiated the process to extradite Simon Ekpa, a prominent pro-Biafran activist, from Finland. This comes after Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa in November 2024 on terrorism-related charges, including incitement to violence and financing terrorist activities. General Christopher Musa, Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, confirmed that the necessary legal documents have been submitted to the Finnish government for Ekpa's extradition.
In an interview on Channels Television's 2024 Year-In-Review program, General Musa expressed satisfaction with Ekpa's arrest, emphasizing that international standards are following legal procedures. He further mentioned that Ekpa's arrest is part of broader efforts to address separatist activities in Nigeria, particularly in the southeastern region.
Ekpa, associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been accused of using social media platforms to spread separatist rhetoric, incite violence, and destabilize Nigeria. Finnish authorities have placed him under remand after a district court in Lahti found reasonable grounds for public incitement with terrorist intent in Nigeria.
General Musa also highlighted the decreasing effectiveness of the sit-at-home orders that Ekpa had propagated in southeastern Nigeria, attributing this decline to ongoing military operations aimed at restoring peace and order in the region. The extradition request is now part of an ongoing legal and diplomatic process.
