Nigerian billionaire Folorunso Alakija has reportedly lost her sight due to complications following a near-air mishap. The 73-year-old oil magnate allegedly ignored medical treatment, focusing on religious activities instead. Social media reactions have been mixed, reigniting debates over her wealth and Nigeria’s oil asset distribution.
According to Sahara Reporters, Nigerian billionaire Folorunso Alakija has completely lost her sight, reportedly due to complications following a near air mishap. Sources revealed that the incident, which she experienced while traveling with her husband, Modupe Alakija, led to a spike in her blood pressure, ultimately affecting her vision.
Alakija, 73, had been battling eyesight issues for some time. Instead of seeking medical treatment, she reportedly focused on religious activities, founding the Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International. However, her condition worsened, leading to total blindness.
A prominent businesswoman and philanthropist, Alakija is the founder of Famfa Oil, which holds a significant stake in Nigeria’s lucrative Agbami oil field. She gained prominence in the 1990s after securing an oil prospecting license under General Ibrahim Babangida’s military regime, reportedly through her close ties with his wife, Maryam Babangida.
Her wealth, estimated at $1 billion by Forbes in 2020, has been a subject of controversy. Many Nigerians have criticized how she acquired her oil assets, with some calling for the nationalization of OML 127.
Recent reports also suggest that Alakija and her husband have been living apart due to personal differences, though no official statement has been made.
Social media reactions to her condition have been mixed, with some offering prayers for her recovery while others reignited debates about Nigeria’s oil wealth distribution.
