he Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has attributed Nigeria's current economic challenges to the former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, absolving President Bola Tinubu of blame. In a statement signed by the group's Publicity and Organising Secretaries, Jare Ajayi and Kole Omololu, Afenifere criticized Buhari's administration for not including provisions for oil subsidies in the previous year's budget, leading to Tinubu's cancellation of the subsidy regime.
The group pointed to a flawed federalism and unfulfilled promises under Buhari, citing increased terrorism, banditry, and breakdown of law and order during his tenure. Afenifere accused the former Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, of printing N22.7 trillion, contributing to economic challenges.
Afenifere commended Tinubu's prompt actions upon assuming office, including abolishing subsidies, deregulating the forex regime, and implementing measures to address economic challenges.
The group proposed a vibrant Ministry of Information, regular town hall meetings, and realignment of the National Assembly budget to engage with citizens. Afenifere called for governors to deliver on their increased allocations due to subsidy removal and exchange rate adjustments, emphasizing the need for capital punishment for banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.
The group urged a return to fiscal federalism with state police and state ownership of mineral resources. Afenifere emphasized the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence in navigating the current challenges.
