Workers at Nigeria's 36 state and national assemblies have announced plans to shut down their respective workplaces until their demands for financial autonomy for the legislative arm are met. The workers, organized under the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), are calling on state governors to immediately implement financial autonomy for state assemblies in line with the 1999 Constitution. Their demand is in line with the constitution, and they have already issued a 21-day strike notice.
They have submitted letters to the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Chairman of the Forum of Speakers, and the Department of State Services, explaining that the shutdown of legislative branches is necessary due to the governors' failure to implement financial autonomy as provided in the constitution. The strike ultimatum, initially set for October 18, 2023, was extended by one week to allow for a resolution.
Parliamentary workers have protested and embarked on strikes multiple times to emphasize their demand for financial autonomy.
