The Nigerian military has denied allegations of civilian casualties in recent airstrikes conducted in the Silame Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State. Reports had surfaced claiming that the airstrikes, targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group, mistakenly hit the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, resulting in over ten civilian deaths and numerous injuries.
In a statement, Abubakar Abdullahi, the joint media coordinator for Operation Hadarin Daji, clarified that the strikes were based on extensive intelligence and reconnaissance, aimed exclusively at verified terrorist hideouts. Abdullahi emphasized the military’s commitment to precision and the protection of civilian lives. He also warned against unverified reports, suggesting that such narratives could be part of efforts by terrorist groups to discredit military successes.
Supporting this position, Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Olusola Akinboyewa confirmed that the operation was informed by credible intelligence and corroborated by aerial surveillance. Akinboyewa assured that any claims of civilian harm would be thoroughly investigated, with updates provided as necessary.
