The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has called for an increase in call tariffs by Q1 2025 to help telecom operators improve service quality and address the impact of currency depreciation on infrastructure. The move aims to ensure the sustainability and growth of the industry.

Telecommunications companies in Nigeria, represented by the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), have called for a review of call tariffs by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in the first quarter of 2025. ATCON's president, Tony Emoekpere, highlighted the need for this increase to support the ongoing operations of telecom companies and to enhance service quality.

Emoekpere pointed out that the depreciation of the local currency has negatively impacted the telecom industry, affecting service delivery and infrastructure maintenance. He emphasized that while the population of Nigeria continues to grow, the current revenue generated by telecom companies is insufficient to meet the demands of the increasing population and the cost of operations.

The request for a tariff hike is aimed at ensuring the sustainability of telecom companies and improving service quality amidst growing challenges. Emoekpere urged both the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy and the NCC to consider this issue seriously, given the critical state of the sector. He also pointed to previous discussions about harmonizing tariffs but stressed the need for swift action to prevent further deterioration in service quality.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has raised similar concerns, warning that without tariff adjustments, members may be forced to reduce services.
