The Senate passed a bill to increase salaries, allowances, and benefits for judicial officers in Nigeria. The bill aims to address the remuneration disparity and enhance the welfare of the judiciary. Key provisions include salary increments for Chief Justice of Nigeria and Supreme Court Justices.
The Senate made a significant stride on Thursday by passing a bill aimed at increasing the salaries, allowances, and other benefits of judicial officers across Nigeria. Titled “A bill for an act to prescribe the salaries, allowances and fringe benefits of judicial office holders in Nigeria and for related matters (2024),” the bill had previously been approved by the House of Representatives.
It proposes a monthly package of N5.39 million for the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and a total package of N4.21 million for Justices of the Supreme Court, among others.
During the plenary, Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin highlighted the silent struggles of judicial officers and commended the President for addressing their concerns. Although Senator Adams Oshiomhole expressed concerns about fixed wages amidst economic fluctuations, the bill received support from various senators.
Following its passage, the bill was referred to the Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters for further review, marking a crucial step towards enhancing the welfare of judicial personnel.
