Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, proposes establishing "Power Rangers" to protect Nigeria's power infrastructure from vandalism, stressing the need for robust security measures to ensure national development. The call has sparked a mix of humorous and supportive reactions on social media.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, has proposed the creation of a specialized unit dubbed “Power Rangers” to safeguard Nigeria’s power infrastructure from vandals and terrorists. Speaking at the passing out parade of the second batch of 350 Mining Marshals at the NSCDC Complex in Sauka, Abuja, on June 14, Dr. Tunji Ojo highlighted the critical need to protect the nation’s power assets to ensure sustainable development.
Dr. Tunji Ojo expressed deep concern over the frequent attacks on power infrastructure, emphasizing that such vandalism poses a significant threat to national development. "I will speak with my brother, the Minister of Power, about the alarming rate of economic terrorism targeting our transmission lines. We must take decisive action," he stated.
The minister urged the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to form a dedicated squad to combat these vandals. "The next time I come here, I want to see my Power Rangers—personnel committed to protecting our distribution lines, generation companies, and every aspect of the power sector," he declared. He underscored the importance of this initiative by noting that no country can thrive without a stable and secure power sector.
Dr. Tunji Ojo also called for a strategic approach to fulfilling the NSCDC's mandate, suggesting a sector-specific focus to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. The proposal has sparked various reactions from the public, with many taking to social media to voice their opinions.
One user humorously supported the initiative: "Please speak to your brother and his family too. Let the vandalism stop! God bless you!! Up Up POWER RANGERS!" Another user commented on the lighthearted nature of the proposal, saying, "Na cruise full this Nigeria," accompanied by laughing emojis. Others made playful references to various Power Rangers series, with one asking, "Shey SPD Abi Ninja force? Or mystic force?" and another adding, "We go soon employ Voltron force na me be yellow lion."
While some responses were in jest, others appreciated the underlying message, endorsing the idea for its potential to safeguard vital infrastructure.
