Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, founder of ABUAD, wins the 2024 Best Nigerian Patriot’s Award for his impactful contributions to education, law, and philanthropy. However, the recognition has stirred debate due to his handling of a defamation case against activist Dele Farotimi, raising questions about his legacy and commitment to justice.
Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, founder of Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has been honored with the 2024 Best Nigerian Patriot’s Award by the Association of United Nations Ambassadors for Peace. The award, to be presented on January 9, 2025, at Labour House, Abuja, celebrates his contributions to societal development and philanthropy.
The selection committee, chaired by Professor Joseph Legend, praised Babalola’s remarkable achievements, including founding ABUAD in 2009, which has significantly reduced illiteracy and crime while promoting quality education. His law firm, Afe Babalola & Company (Emmanuel Chambers), has mentored over 2,500 lawyers, including 100 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), and produced judges and attorneys general.
Babalola’s philanthropic efforts, such as providing employment for over 1,600 people and supporting vulnerable individuals, were also highlighted. The committee described him as a detribalized nationalist whose selfless activities have positively impacted lives within Africa and beyond.
However, the award has sparked public debate, with some Nigerians questioning its timing and appropriateness. Critics point to Babalola’s handling of the defamation case against human rights activist Dele Farotimi, whose book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, allegedly defamed the nonagenarian. The case has led to discussions about Babalola’s commitment to free expression and his legacy as a patriot.
Despite the controversy, the award underscores Babalola’s extensive contributions to education, law, and national development, cementing his status as a notable figure in Nigeria’s history.
