In its '2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria,' the U.S. Government alleges that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Bola Tinubu, orchestrated voter suppression tactics in Igbo-dominated areas of Lagos during the March 18, 2023 governorship election.
The report claims that APC supporters intimidated and hindered Igbo voters from casting their ballots, favoring incumbent governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's reelection bid over Labour Party candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.
Instances of violence, voter intimidation, and attacks on journalists were cited, with reports indicating that APC supporters in Ojo threatened to assault ethnic Igbo voters, and in Eti-Osa, they obstructed non-Yoruba voters from accessing polling stations.
Furthermore, the report highlights videos on social media depicting police officers failing to intervene in electoral malpractices. These allegations raise significant concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the protection of voters' rights in Nigeria.
