A former Catholic priest, Dr. Echezona Obiagbaosogu, has resigned after 17 years in the priesthood to embrace African Traditional Religion. Obiagbaosogu, who is also a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, decided on the completion of his PhD dissertation on rainmaking practices among the Igbo people.
Driven by a deep curiosity about African spirituality and his research on rainmaking, Obiagbaosogu expressed his desire to revive and preserve traditional cultural practices that were lost due to colonial influences. His academic journey and traditional apprenticeship led him to appreciate the importance of African spirituality in healing and community well-being.
Though once a Catholic priest, Obiagbaosogu believes his true calling is to serve his people through ancestral traditions. He emphasized that his shift wasn’t a rejection of God, but a pursuit of a more meaningful connection with the divine through African practices.
