South African artist Tyla won Top Afrobeats Artist and Top Afrobeats Song at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, beating Nigerian stars like Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Asake. Her victory sparked mixed reactions in Nigeria, as many felt she was more aligned with Amapiano than Afrobeats.

South African singer Tyla made history at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, clinching the Top Afrobeats Artist of the Year award. On December 12, Tyla triumphed over notable Nigerian stars such as Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Asake in a category typically dominated by Nigerian artists.

In addition to her win as Top Afrobeats Artist, Tyla also took home the Top Afrobeats Song award for her global hit, "Water." She outshone competitors, including Adam Port & Stryv feat. Malachiii's "Move" and Tems' "Me & U," to secure the prestigious honor.

Tyla’s win further solidifies her rising global influence in the music scene. She has already made waves internationally, including earning the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in February 2024. At just 22 years old, Tyla became the youngest African artist to win a Grammy, marking another milestone in her rapidly growing career.

However, Tyla’s victory has sparked confusion and surprise among many Nigerians. Fans took to social media to express shock, as they believe she is more associated with Amapiano, a genre originating from South Africa, rather than Afrobeats. Many Nigerians questioned the relevance of her being nominated and winning in the Afrobeats category, considering that Amapiano is distinct from Afrobeats.
