Aisha Yesufu clarified that Peter Obi did not create the Obidient movement; it arose from post-EndSARS protests anger. Her remarks have sparked diverse reactions, highlighting ongoing political debates in Nigeria.
Aisha Yesufu, a prominent member of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign team, recently clarified that Peter Obi, the party’s flagbearer, did not create the Obidient movement. Instead, she emphasized that the movement emerged from the collective anger following the EndSARS protests.
Yesufu explained on social media platform X that the Obidient movement was born out of the frustration and political engagement that grew among Nigerian youths after the EndSARS killings. She noted that the movement formed in response to the actions of the APC government during the protests, with many people motivated to vote out the ruling party. Peter Obi, she stated, became a beneficiary of this widespread discontent.
“Yesufu posted: “Nobody created Obidient movement. After the #EndSARS killing by APC government, many became interested in politics since they were mocked and told to vote for those who killed the protesters. There was a collective anger to vote out APC. Peter Obi was a beneficiary of that collective anger of the people.”
This statement sparked a variety of reactions from Nigerians on social media. Some supporters agreed, noting that the Obidient movement symbolized a broader desire for change in the country. However, critics of Peter Obi used the opportunity to bring up past controversies, including his alleged involvement in the Agulu SARS killings during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.
The discussions highlighted the deep-seated divisions among Nigerians regarding political accountability and the ongoing impact of the EndSARS movement. While some users accused Yesufu of undermining Obi, others praised her for shedding light on the true origins of the Obidient movement.
