The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to replace foreign cartoons with locally produced content aimed at promoting national values among children. This initiative, highlighted by the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Onilu, during a campaign launch in Bauchi, comes in response to concerns that foreign cartoons are influencing Nigerian children’s behaviors and attitudes.

Onilu, represented by Nura Yusuf Kobi, expressed apprehension over the increasing infiltration of foreign cultures through animated characters. He emphasized that the replacement initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu, is intended to cultivate a more defined Nigerian identity, countering negative portrayals of the country abroad. “We have noticed that our kids learn many foreign attitudes through cartoons. We will substitute foreign content on platforms like GOtv and StarTimes with local productions that reflect our culture,” Onilu stated.

Social media reactions to the announcement have been mixed. Some users expressed skepticism, with comments like “Replacing everything but themselves,” reflecting doubts about the government’s ability to effect change. Others sarcastically remarked on the irony of the situation, while some defended the enjoyment children find in foreign cartoons.
