VIPs failing to pay will face charges, ending a practice that disadvantaged the poor.
President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima will no longer be exempt from paying tollgate fees when using Nigerian airports, as decided by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
The decision, made during a meeting presided over by President Tinubu, aims to address revenue loss, with Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo highlighting a significant shortfall in revenue due to exemptions.
Keyamo presented a memorandum to the council, emphasizing that the government was losing over 82% of the revenue it should have earned from tollgate fees. Initially, only the president and vice president were exempt, but Tinubu directed that they should also pay. Keyamo expressed regret that wealthy VIPs who should pay were not charged, while only poor individuals had to pay for using the tollgates.
This decision marks a shift towards ensuring equity in toll collection at airports, aiming to rectify the discrepancy in fee exemptions and revenue generation.
