The home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured their spot in the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) after a 3-1 victory over Ghana’s Black Galaxies in the second leg of the qualifiers. The match took place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday. Following a 0-0 draw in Accra, the Super Eagles needed an outright win to qualify, and they delivered spectacularly.
The Eagles dominated from the start, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead in the first half. Sadiq Ismail opened the scoring in the 18th minute, slotting the ball past the Ghanaian goalkeeper after a long pass. Just minutes later, captain Nduka Junior doubled the lead with a powerful strike from a corner in the 21st minute. In the 25th minute, Saviour Isaac added a third goal, capitalizing on a poor pass from the Ghanaian goalkeeper, rounding the keeper, and finishing into an empty net.
Ghana pulled one back in the 73rd minute through Stephen Amankona, but despite their efforts, they couldn't mount a comeback. The Super Eagles held firm to secure a 3-1 win and a spot in the 2024 CHAN, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from February 1 to 28, 2025. This marks Nigeria's return to the tournament after their last appearance in 2018, where they reached the final.
