The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has emphatically declared that the Church cannot extend blessings to same-sex unions and activities, citing their opposition rooted in God's law, Church teachings, Nigerian laws, and cultural norms.
The bishops reiterated the Church's stance on marriage as an "exclusive, stable, and indissoluble union of a man and a woman." This statement follows the recent reaffirmation by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), clarifying that the Church's teachings on the sacrament of marriage remain unchanged, despite the Vatican's recent decision permitting blessings for same-sex couples.
The CBCN emphasized that while God's mercy is open to all, the Church does not possess the authority to bless irregular unions, including same-sex marriages, maintaining the sanctity of holy matrimony.
