The acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive for medical personnel in Nigeria to treat gunshot victims without the need for a police report. This directive, based on the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act of 2017, is aimed at ensuring that victims receive immediate medical attention, regardless of the circumstances.

The directive was conveyed in a police internal memo dated October 25, 2023, and signed by the Force Principal Staff Officer, Olatunji Disu. It was addressed to various law enforcement authorities and commandants of police colleges in different regions.

The memo emphasizes the importance of compliance with the law and the need to inform and educate the public about this directive. It reads, "The Inspector-General of Police further directs that you make this a subject of lecture and circulate widely for the members of the public to be aware of our compliance with the National Law."
