Wigwe University, a visionary project conceived by the late Herbert Wigwe, former CEO of Access Holdings Plc, is set to redefine tertiary education in Nigeria with its ambitious academic programs and premium facilities.
Scheduled to commence operations in September 2024, the institution, nestled in the tranquil environs of Isiokpo in Rivers State, boasts four distinguished colleges: Management and Social Sciences, Arts, Science and Computing, and Engineering. However, as the university unveils its fee structure, a storm of controversy brews over the exorbitant costs.
According to the university's website, course fees range from N9.6 million for the College of Arts to N11,998,800 for other colleges, covering essentials like tuition, books, and laboratory supplies. Notably, the accommodation options add another layer of financial strain, with luxury single rooms commanding a staggering monthly fee of N1 million. While other accommodation choices range between N3.5 million to N3,845,000 per session, the exorbitant costs have sparked debate over accessibility and affordability in higher education.
Despite the economic implications of increased local spending and job creation, concerns linger over the widening gap between educational aspirations and financial realities for students and their families.
