The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced an increase in the country's power transmission capacity to 8,500 megawatts. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), a government-owned firm, revealed this development, emphasizing its ability to evacuate all electricity generated by power generation companies. This announcement came during the Bi-annual Joint Operations, Generation, and Distribution Companies planning meeting held in Abuja.
General Manager of Transmission Service Provider at TCN, Ajiboye Oluwagbenga, stated that the government is committed to expanding Nigeria's power transmission capacity. Responding to concerns from power generation companies (Gencos) about TCN's capacity to evacuate the power produced, Oluwagbenga debunked these claims, emphasizing that they have the capacity to handle the electricity.
However, he noted that distribution constraints still exist. Oluwagbenga explained that while TCN has the capacity to transmit 8,500MW, the power generation supplied to the grid typically remains around 4,000MW. He suggested that the distribution companies (Discos) and generation companies should work together and sign service level agreements to improve the situation. The increase in power transmission capacity represents a significant step in addressing Nigeria's energy challenges
