The National Judicial Council (NJC) suspends Rivers and Anambra High Court judges, Justice G.C. Aguma and Justice A.O. Nwabunike, for one year without pay due to misconduct. They will be placed on a watch list for two years. Additionally, two judicial officers face compulsory retirement for falsifying their ages.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has taken disciplinary action against two high-ranking judges for misconduct. Justice G.C. Aguma of Rivers State and Justice A.O. Nwabunike of Anambra State have been suspended for one year without pay. Additionally, both judges will be placed on a two-year watch list, which means their professional activities will be closely monitored during that period.
This decision was made during the 107th meeting of the NJC, chaired by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, which took place on November 13-14, 2024. The NJC addressed various cases of judicial misconduct, with five serving judicial officers being sanctioned. In addition to the suspension of the two judges, the NJC recommended the compulsory retirement of two other judicial officials: the Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice T.E. Chukwuemeka Chikeka, and the Grand Kadi of Yobe State, Hon. Kadi Babagana Mahdi, for falsifying their ages.
The Council also considered petitions against Hon. Justice O.A. Ojo, Chief Judge of Osun State, which are under further investigation.
