The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the recent 50% telecom tariff hike, calling it an unjust burden on Nigerians already struggling with economic hardship. The NLC demands the reversal of the increase and urges citizens to unite against policies prioritizing corporate profits over public welfare.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed strong disapproval of the Federal Government's recent approval of a 50% hike in telecommunication tariffs. The increase, endorsed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), comes at a time of widespread economic hardship, further burdening Nigerian workers and citizens.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, highlighted the disproportionate impact on workers earning the ₦70,000 minimum wage, who now face telecom costs rising from ₦7,000 to ₦10,500 monthly—over 15% of their income. The Congress criticized the government’s prioritization of corporate profits over citizens’ welfare, contrasting the swift tariff approval with the delayed implementation of minimum wage adjustments.

Ajaero described the hike as evidence of the government’s misaligned priorities, questioning its commitment to protecting Nigerians’ welfare. He called for immediate intervention by the National Assembly and urged the government to halt the implementation of the tariff increase.

While acknowledging the need for occasional tariff reviews, the NLC opposed the 50% hike, advocating for a more reasonable adjustment determined through dialogue. The Congress urged citizens to reject the increase, warning of potential nationwide protests and a boycott of telecom services if the tariff is not reversed.

The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to defending workers’ interests, condemning policies that deepen poverty and inequality. It called on the government to prioritize Nigerians' welfare over corporate gains, emphasizing the need for equitable economic policies.
