The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly advocated for the withdrawal of the Tax Reform Bills presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly. The bills have sparked significant criticism, particularly from northern leaders who argue that the proposed reforms may not benefit their region.
In a New Year message to Nigerians, especially workers, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the union's commitment to pushing for an upward wage review to help workers cope with the rising cost of living. The message, titled "In 2025, hope is in our collective resolve," encouraged Nigerians to draw strength from their collective resolve to overcome economic challenges and work towards national development.
Ajaero highlighted that the government should focus on improving the welfare of citizens, including access to food, healthcare, quality housing, and education, as well as ensuring greater security. He called for transparency, inclusivity, and social dialogue in the formulation of policies to foster national unity and stability.
The NLC also urged the federal government to engage all key stakeholders in the process of drafting a new national tax law. They expressed their desire for a law that would be widely accepted and capable of driving national development. In addition, Ajaero reiterated the NLC’s call for full compliance with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and a wage review to address the impact of recent economic policies on workers' welfare.
