The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) rebukes SGF George Akume's characterization of their nationwide strike as "treasonable felony and economic sabotage". NLC denounces the remarks, asserting their legitimate demands for fair wages and an end to economic disparities.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, for his disparaging remarks regarding Monday's nationwide strike. In response to Akume's labeling of the strike as "treasonable felony and economic sabotage," the NLC denounced his statements, asserting that they exposed his true character.

Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs at the NLC, rebuffed Akume's insinuations, highlighting that the real economic saboteurs are those who engage in corrupt practices, misappropriate public funds, and exploit the nation's resources for personal gain.

Expressing profound disappointment, the NLC condemned the SGF's comments, emphasizing that they undermine the spirit of constructive dialogue necessary for resolving ongoing issues. The NLC reiterated the legitimacy of their demands, including a new national minimum wage aligned with the cost of living, a reversal of electricity tariff hikes, and an end to discriminatory practices in electricity billing.

The demands, grounded in principles of economic justice and fairness, aim to benefit all Nigerian workers and citizens. The NLC asserted that the SGF's accusations fail to address the substantive issues at hand and divert attention from the genuine grievances of workers.

By denouncing Akume's remarks, the NLC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers, calling for meaningful dialogue and action from the government to address their concerns.
