Benson Upah, spokesperson for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), warns that petrol prices could reach N5,000 per litre, following recent increases contrary to government agreements. He emphasizes widespread anger among Nigerians and criticizes the government's failure to alleviate economic hardships resulting from rising fuel costs.
In a recent interview, Benson Upah, spokesperson for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), expressed grave concerns over the potential for fuel prices in Nigeria to skyrocket to N5,000 per litre. This alarming forecast follows a recent increase in petrol prices, which contradicts prior agreements with the federal government. Upah indicated that the NLC plans to convene a meeting with its governing bodies to discuss appropriate responses to the escalating fuel costs.
The atmosphere among Nigerians is one of widespread anger, with Upah emphasizing that the frustration is felt beyond the NLC, affecting nearly all citizens except a small elite. The NLC's president previously accused President Tinubu of betraying labor leaders following the price hikes.
Upah highlighted that negotiations had previously taken place, wherein the NLC rejected offers that would significantly harm the average Nigerian’s living conditions. He noted that since the removal of fuel subsidies on May 29, 2023, the nation has grappled with skyrocketing costs in education, transportation, and food, plunging many into uncertainty.
He criticized the government for not addressing the real implications of these price increases and underscored the lack of improvement in living standards despite rising government revenues. Upah condemned those who claim that Nigerians must endure these economic hardships, asserting that such sentiments come from individuals disconnected from the reality of the average citizen's struggles.
