The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) threatens a nationwide strike if its President, Joe Ajaero, is detained. The NLC’s NEC held an emergency meeting following Ajaero’s police invitation over alleged terrorism financing.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning that it will initiate a nationwide strike if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is detained by the police. The NLC's leadership conveyed this threat following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on August 20, 2024. This meeting was prompted by the police summoning Ajaero in connection with allegations related to terrorism financing.
During the NEC meeting, members agreed that Ajaero should honor the police invitation. However, they emphasized the need for an extension to allow sufficient time for legal preparations. Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, NLC’s Deputy President, urged workers nationwide to stay alert for further instructions. He made it clear that any move by the police to detain Ajaero would be met with a decisive response, potentially leading to a mass strike.
The NEC expressed strong disapproval of the ongoing harassment of NLC leaders, describing it as an attempt to undermine the labor movement and stifle dissent. The Congress vowed to defend its rights and those of Nigerian workers, insisting that it would not be intimidated by what it sees as politically motivated actions.
In their communiqué, the NLC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice and urged the public to support their cause against the state’s oppressive measures. The NEC also directed all its affiliates to prepare for possible industrial action if the situation escalates.
