The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have strongly opposed the federal government's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, arguing that it undermines democratic governance and violates constitutional provisions.

In a joint statement, the labour unions criticized the decision, saying it exceeds presidential authority and threatens the stability of state institutions. They also condemned the removal of elected officials, warning that such actions set a troubling precedent for democracy in Nigeria.

The unions expressed concerns that the emergency rule could negatively impact businesses, lead to job losses, and create economic instability for workers. They urged President Bola Tinubu to reverse the decision and respect constitutional limits on executive power.

According to the labour leaders, any policy that disrupts governance and economic stability should be reconsidered. They reaffirmed their commitment to defending workers' rights and called on all democratic institutions to resist political interference.
