The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has debunked a viral video claiming Dangote Refinery’s petrol is superior. NNPC dismissed the fuel comparison test as misleading and unscientific. The company warned against misinformation, reaffirming its commitment to quality and threatening legal action against false claims about its operations.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has dismissed a viral video claiming that petrol sold at its stations is of lower quality compared to that from Dangote Refinery. The company described the claims as misleading and unverified.

The controversy began when tech reviewer Olatunde Shobajo, known as Valor Reviews, conducted an online fuel comparison test. In his video, he claimed that petrol from an NNPC station and another from MRS, a Dangote-affiliated outlet, were tested for efficiency. The Dangote fuel reportedly lasted 13 minutes longer, sparking online discussions.

Reacting to the video, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, dismissed the findings, stating that they were unscientific and lacked professional oversight. He reaffirmed that NNPC's petrol meets high-quality standards, ensuring efficiency and sustainability for consumers.

Soneye also pointed out that a significant portion of the petrol sold at NNPC stations in Lagos comes from Dangote Refinery itself, making the comparison misleading. He accused economic saboteurs of attempting to damage NNPC’s reputation and stated that the company would not tolerate misinformation.

NNPC warned that legal action would be taken against individuals or groups spreading falsehoods about its operations. The company urged Nigerians to rely on verified sources for accurate information and reiterated its commitment to ensuring fuel availability, affordability, and quality in line with global industry standards.

The video has since fueled debates among Nigerians, with some questioning fuel quality across different retail stations and calling for more transparency in the industry.
