The National Industrial Court has ordered NNPC to pay N629 million to Dr. Williams for wrongful dismissal. Williams was dismissed in 2018, but the court ruled NNPC did not follow fair labor procedures. The judgment includes unpaid salaries, damages, and legal costs, highlighting procedural violations by NNPC.

The National Industrial Court has ordered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to pay N629 million to Dr. Williams, a former employee, for wrongful dismissal. Williams, who served as an Assistant Administrative Supervisor, was dismissed in 2018, a move deemed unlawful by the court. His dismissal, following his identification of fraudulent activities within the company, was ruled as unjust, as NNPC failed to follow its Corporate Policy and Procedure Guide, denying him a fair hearing.

The court awarded N24.6 million in unpaid salaries and N600 million in exemplary damages, along with N5 million for legal costs. Justice Faustina Kola-Olalere declared that NNPC’s decision to dismiss Williams instead of following the Ad-Hoc Committee’s recommendation to terminate his employment was a violation of the company’s policies.

NNPC’s defense cited Williams’ alleged negligence, but the court found no sufficient evidence to support this claim, ruling in favor of the claimant.
