The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has debunked reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), clarifying that the facility is undergoing routine maintenance.
In a statement released on Friday, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, dismissed the claims as inaccurate, emphasizing that operations at WRPC’s Area 1 were deliberately scaled down on January 25, 2025, to facilitate scheduled intervention on critical equipment.
According to NNPCL, the maintenance includes upgrades to key field instruments to ensure the continued production of premium petroleum products such as Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and kerosene. The company reassured stakeholders that despite the ongoing work, the refinery remains operational, maintaining an average daily supply of eight trucks of AGO over the past 11 days.
NNPCL further assured the public that sufficient petroleum stock is available to sustain truck load-outs and prevent any disruption in supply. The company urged Nigerians to disregard misinformation regarding an explosion, reiterating its commitment to ensuring the refinery’s smooth operations.
As the maintenance nears completion, NNPCL expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their patience and cooperation, confirming that Area 1 of the refinery is set to resume full operations in the coming days. The company reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s energy security through proactive infrastructure management and routine system upgrades.
This clarification follows growing concerns over refinery incidents, with NNPCL emphasizing the importance of relying on verified information to prevent unnecessary panic.
