The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to conducting a fair and impartial demolition of illegal structures in Lekki Phase II and surrounding areas. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that justice and fairness would be upheld during this ongoing exercise. Despite pleas from occupants and owners of structures built in violation of drainage setback regulations, the commissioner stated that stopping the demolition would be a breach of standards.
Wahab pointed out that the already demolished duplexes had encroached on drainage setbacks, similar to the ones scheduled for removal. The government's goal is to restore the master plan and ensure a free flow of stormwater by reclaiming drainage setbacks. The commissioner noted that the affected property owners had been notified about their violations since 2020.
Regarding the closure and reopening of certain markets in the state, Wahab explained that these measures were taken due to violations of the State Sanitation Laws. He stressed that when markets met the checklist of requirements, they would be allowed to reopen. The government is also planning a safety audit in the markets to ensure the safety of traders and patrons.
Wahab was joined by Permanent Secretaries from the Office of Drainage Services and Environmental Services during the inspection of various housing estates in the region.
