The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its directive for telecom operators to disconnect subscribers not linked to their National Identification Numbers (NIN) by February 28, 2024.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, emphasized the critical national security importance of linking NIN to SIM cards during the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair's NCC Special Day.

The deadline of February 28th remains in place, and telecom operators are instructed to deactivate lines not linked to NIN by that date. Reuben Mouka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, conveyed that the Commission is committed to ensuring service availability, affordability, and sustainability in the telecommunications sector.

The NCC urged telecom firms to prioritize customer satisfaction and adhere to high service delivery standards. In addition to the NIN-SIM linkage directive, the NCC has implemented measures such as the introduction of approved Harmonised Short Codes, enabling consumers with over 224 million active mobile lines in Nigeria to access services seamlessly across all networks.

The NCC aims to balance economic growth through local content development while addressing challenges faced by consumers and protecting their rights.
