Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has defied the PDP National Working Committee, declaring the South-South zonal congress in Calabar final despite a court injunction. The PDP leadership disowned the event, but Wike insists no other congress will be held, reinforcing his influence in the party’s regional politics.
Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has taken a bold stance against the National Working Committee (NWC) of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that no further South-South zonal congress will take place following the one held in Calabar, Cross River State.
Despite a court injunction from a Port Harcourt High Court barring the congress, Wike and his allies, including former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, proceeded with the event. The PDP’s NWC has disowned the gathering, stating it did not officially conduct any regional zonal congress.
Addressing delegates, Wike reaffirmed the South-South’s stronghold within the PDP and dismissed the need for unanimous attendance at congresses. He emphasized that no external force could dictate the party’s affairs in the zone.
“No congress has ever had full attendance of all delegates. This is the final zonal congress of the South-South; no other will hold,” Wike declared. He urged party members to prioritize unity and elect officials who would uphold the PDP’s interests.
His remarks underline ongoing tensions within the party, raising questions about the authority of the NWC and the future direction of the South-South bloc within the PDP.
